This is a response to the article entitled “Mob rule prevails as Aaron Persky is Fired: Former Judge Ousted from his coaching position at LHS” published on 9/25/19.
I would respectfully encourage the student and any others reading this Epitaph article to read the 2019 book entitled “Know My Name” by Chanel Miller in understanding the case against Aaron Persky. While Judge Persky claimed to follow past guidance for his sentencing – he had a longstanding reputation for giving light sentences to young men who, although convicted of rapes and sexual violence, were from an entitled and privileged class that could hire lawyers to plead their cases and get little to no jail time.
Judge Persky was recalled because of a community’s absolute shock and disgust at his light sentencing of Brock Turner, a convicted Stanford student who sexually assaulted an unconscious young woman against her will and left her in the dirt behind a dumpster on the Stanford campus. Chanel Miller’s statement to the judge went viral on social media because of its powerful victim account. Here is her account on CBS 60 minutes.
I can’t think of any reason why our high school district would hire such an individual who is obviously not suitable for work with young high school students. I would love the Epitaph to do a book review or even article on Chanel Miller.
