As the lights dim and the crowd roars, the white curtain is absorbed by the blue spotlight. The curtain rises and the spotlight is centered on singer, songwriter Omar Apollo. Dressed in white from head to toe and donning a matching fur jacket, Apollo opens the show with his new song, “Be Careful With Me.”
After Apollo released his sixth album, “God Said No,” it quickly rose to number 56 on the United States Billboard 200. This eventually led to the “God Said No World Tour” on Oct. 4, with Apollo coming to the Greek Theatre in Berkeley.
Throughout the show, Apollo made it evident he was born a performer. From the vocals to the dancing, alongside the set changes and dancers, the show was spectacular. His radiating, energetic stage presence only made me even more captivated in his performance.
To kick off the show, Apollo performed his upbeat pop hits, including “Useless,” “Less of You” and “Done With You.” He, along with his backup dancers, created an atmosphere that had audience members like myself dancing and screaming along to the lyrics.
One segment of the show consisted of the dancers having solos where they freestyled in modern and contemporary dancing. As a dancer, it was inspiring to see the way they expressed themselves by portraying a story on stage in front of thousands of people. They did this through a unique type of dance uncommon for concert choreography, showing how Apollo let his dancers shine on stage with him, amplifying the performance.
Then, the mood changed. As the cheers continued, the majority of the Latinos in the audience, raised their Mexican flags, cheered for him to sing his Spanish songs. The curtain lit up with childhood home videos of Apollo and his family as he grabbed his guitar to sing “Dos Uno Nueve (219)” and “En el olvido.”
His passionate and intimate singing left me in awe. Although I could not sing along, I could hear many voices echo around me, sparking a touching feeling from the sense of community that was created.
The night was coming to an end, and Apollo finished the show with his number one song, “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All).” To hear this song in real life was surreal. People left and right yelling the relatable lyrics gave me chills. Being able to freely sing and express my feelings through a song, shouting alongside the crowd, was liberating.
Apollo’s performance captivated the audience in every way possible. After watching the inspiring dancers and observing people come together through Apollo’s vocal performance, Apollo’s “God Said No World Tour” has truly become evergreen.
