“EPIC: The Musical,” a collection of music based on Homer’s “Odyssey,” is a dynamic take on the ancient tale, blending powerful storytelling with an exhilarating modern score. The latest saga, “EPIC: The Vengeance Saga,” released on Oct. 31, easily became my favorite saga. Watching it for the first time was a rollercoaster of emotions, from heart pounding moments of anticipation to instances of deep reflection.
“The Vengeance Saga” follows Odysseus’ journey alone towards Ithaca, his home, and ends with the ruthless battle against Poseidon in which Odyseeus stabs him ruthlessly. Odysseus’ actions solidify that he is no longer the man we followed at the beginning of the show. He has become one devoid of emotions and mercy for his foes.
This final scene expands on the central theme of the show: being the monster, someone who does evil, is sometimes necessary. His final act in “The Vengeance Saga” demonstrates his acceptance of the monster, as this time he is the one in control.
While the show centers on Odysseus’ character and journey, it still gives attention to supporting characters and makes them essential to the story. Polities, Odysseus’ childhood friend, remains a large part of the story after his death. The inclusion of Polities adds to the story by adding more emotional weight to the story.
The creativity transcends the musical and can be seen in the marketing of “EPIC.” Jorge Rivera-Herans, the mastermind behind “EPIC,” has cultivated it to go from just music into a collaborative project.
Originally started as a TikTok project, the musical has not forgotten its roots in social media. Rivera-Herans often posts snippets of unreleased songs, giving insight into parts of the musical.
One such instance is the series titled “Hermes and Jay,” a piece of promotional content for “The Vengeance Saga.” This series brought a character from “EPIC,” Hermes, to life and explored his playful personality.
In addition, the community plays a vital role in the creation of “EPIC.” The voice of each character is the voice of a fan of the show who auditioned for the speaking role. Each singer has their own unique voice and personality, making each character truly memorable.
Furthermore, fan animatics also drive attention to “EPIC.” Within two weeks of the release of “The Vengeance Saga,” animators were already releasing their work, showing their love and dedication to the musical.
As “EPIC: The Musical” continues to grow and expand its music, cast and story, I am excited to see what will come next. “The Vengeance Saga” keeps me hooked through the amazing music, intriguing storytelling and deepening connections with the characters. After what “The Vengeance Saga” has achieved, I cannot wait to see what the next installment of this musical, “The Ithaca Saga,” has to offer.
