Art is present everywhere in different forms, art club president, senior Kevin Chang said. As for the traditional type of drawing, it is often a relaxing hobby and greater purpose can be found in it, Chang said.
“In every society we’ve had on Earth, there’s always been some form of art,” Chang said. “It’s a constant, and I think it’s a good way to interpret the world around us.”
AP art teacher Tyler Cripe said that there are many different ways to enjoy art. For example, he said he saves music for when he’s feeling stronger emotions, whereas art induces a more meditative feeling. He said he encourages students to continue art for the rest of their lives, as everyone can find a way to adopt it into their lives.
“As time goes on, I view myself more like a PE teacher,” Cripe said. “I might have one athlete in here who’s gonna play beyond high school as an analogy [to art].”
Life In Focus treasurer, senior Riya Zingade said she is inspired by her favorite photographer, Ansel Adams. He had a unique and innovative style, Zingade said.
“Adams inspired me to explore landscape photography more,” Zingade said in an email. “The composition of his photographs and his overall style has influenced my photography in the sense where it has given me a different way to look at landscapes and experiment with the camera.”
Differing from Zingade’s complex style, Cripe said his preferred method is pen and paper, as it presents him with a simple way to enjoy his surroundings and draw at the same time.
“I like to draw the things that I see. That could be the environment or a place where I’m sitting.” Cripe said. “I like to go out and sit at a coffee shop, I enjoy that a little bit more [than other art].”
Contrasting traditional art and painting techniques, Design It commision committee director, sophomore Kalea Chau said her club is different from other art clubs because of its focus on graphic design and computer work.
“I get to be super creative in what I do,” Chau said. “I have full freedom in doing whatever I want to do, and I put my ideas on a doc or paper.”
Chang said the best parts of all forms of art are felt best while actually creating it, and the greatest way to get that experience is to connect with the community of creators in art clubs.
“[Art clubs] are a pretty cool place,” Chang said. “There are a lot of fun activities, and it’s not just for people who like art. It’s for people who like creating.”
