For years, teachers have struggled to afford healthcare and housing, according to KQED. These issues are not anything new, yet still prompt mass strikes among school staff members.

The situation in San Francisco Unified School District is no different, as its teachers held a strike on Feb. 10, which resulted in 50,000 students being affected, according to the LA Times. After a few days, negotiations were reached, including an agreement to fully fund healthcare costs for teachers in SFUSD.
Although the strike ended within 5 days, other local governments and school districts should take this as a warning to pursue action that will ensure the well-being of teachers.
A whopping 97% of teachers believe their classroom budget is insufficient and requires them to spend their own money on classroom supplies, according to a 2025 poll from AdoptAClassroom. Other factors, such as having to pay for housing and groceries in one of the top five most expensive cities in the world, according to US News, contribute to them not being able to afford to live in SF.
Currently, the average salary for those teaching in SFUSD is $103, 472, according to Mission Local. A minimum income of $131,000 is needed for singles to live comfortably in San Francisco, according to NBC.
Raising wages would alleviate the extra stress of teachers having to pay their bills, along with having to plan lessons for students.
After all, the strike was not decided with just a few days’ notice. There was an 11-month buildup of negotiations before the official strike was announced, according to the United Educators of San Francisco.
It is important for school administrators to take future steps to address teacher concerns and show a willingness to compromise, so they can avoid disruptions to learning and uphold relationships with valuable educators
By further negotiating and raising the minimum salary for teachers in San Francisco, living can be made much more accessible for teachers in an increasingly inflated world.
While SFUSD is just one instance where disruptions happen due to teacher strikes, other districts should seek to end strikes before they are even carried out. It is crucial to support educators as they are responsible for the learning of their students.
Underpaying teachers can adversely affect the class atmosphere and disrupt lesson plans. Being open to compromises, on the other hand, and establishing livable wages for teachers will help promote an effective and continuous learning environment for everyone.
