Since the United States began attacking Iran on Feb. 28, many countries depending on resources from the Middle East have seen prices shoot up. In particular, the Philippines is suffering from heightened gas prices that have increased by nearly 40% as of last month, according to Baker Institute.
Additionally, the Philippines has faced delays of oil imports, leading it to request U.S. approval to compensate with Russian imports, according to the Inquirer.

Needing to ask for U.S. approval to receive oil from foreign nations is inherently detrimental to the distribution of oil to the Philippines, as it creates delays in imports which leads to shortages of oil. The nation has been independent since 1946, and they should not continue chaining themselves to American regulation due to past colonial control and economic ties.
As a result of this oil shortage and delays in U.S. support, the Filipino government has been driven to desperate measures. For instance, it has begun talks in its congress around drilling more oil in its southern Liguasan Marsh, according to Eco-Business.
However, this is damaging the area’s native species, plants and overall ecosystem, sparking environmental concerns and public outrage against the government, according to Mongabay.
As a result of this development, there has also been a widespread lack of price control by the government, leading to many leading transport unions in the Philippines to protest in their streets, according to Socialist Alternative.
To prevent this public upheaval from taking place at all, the U.S. government should stop interfering in foreign affairs like that of the Philippines, as it exacerbates their domestic issues. Likewise, the Filipino government must maintain sovereignty from foreign interests and uphold its resource stability through other ventures and more effective internal policies.
To prevent similar situations from occurring globally, American citizens actively question our nation’s actions. We must support leaders who balance national interests with economic strength while simultaneously avoiding overseas meddling.
On the other hand, Filipinos should continue protesting and voicing their concerns over the high prices of oil plaguing their daily lives. Consequently, the Filipino government can be pushed to foster healthier international relationships, depending on more nations to contribute to their economy instead of allowing solely America to dominate.
